A huge amount of Co2 is produced at industrial sites including mining operations, this will be filtered through membranes and the captured CO2 can then be transported to a number of locations where it will be stored. These range from geological formations, the deep ocean or reduced gas and oil reservoirs. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the range of 1,800 to 20,000 billion metric tonnes of CO2 can be stored underground in the US. There are further options of turning captured CO2 into mineral carbonates and diamonds.
The US National Energy Technology Laboratory has reported that North America could store up to 900 years of CO2 at current production rates.
Research has been carried out at a wood fired power station in the UK where one tonne per day could be removed from the atmosphere and stored in geological formations or turned to mineral carbonates.
